Quick, Healthy breakfast fix

Crunched for time in the mornings? Who isn't?

Here is a great way to boost your morning, stay full, and energized. It also provides most all of your vitamins and minerals for the day too! I make some variation of this smoothie almost every morning before work.

It's simple too. Shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Recipe:
1 Banana (rich in iron, high in potassium which provides energy, increases brain power, reduces depression)
1 Kiwi (excellent source of Vitamin C and Vitamin K, dietary fiber, and potassium)
1 cup frozen fruit
1 tablespoon chia seeds (high in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fiber)
1 scoop Vega One protein powder
1/2 cup plain nonfat or vanilla nonfat yogurt
Dash of cinnamon (lowers blood sugar levels, reduces heart disease risk factors)
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
Enjoy!

Good from grown

1/26/2016

A friend of mine recently introduced to me one of her long-time friends from Rhode Island who started a vegan deli salad company called Good from Grown.

I think their business and product is such a cool idea, I wanted to share it on the blog. Their three different deli salads, chickpea salad original, spice of life deli salad, and zesty dill pickle, are free from: peanuts, dairy, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, tree nuts, fish, and crustacean shellfish. So their products are vegan AND gluten-free. Amazing!

Their products can be found in most grab-and-go refrigerated sections in many retail stores throughout Rhode Island. One pound of any of their deli salads are $10 each and can ordered online as well. Very cool. Their deli salads can be put on a sandwich, eaten with a salad, or devoured right out of the package!

I couldn't agree more and love their  company logo: "making eating well easy." We need more companies and individuals who want to truly make eating well easy. Thanks you ladies and I hope that your product continues to expand all throughout New England.

Snowball cake

Are you snowed in from Winter Storm Jonas, Snowzilla, or Snowmaggedon, whichever you prefer to call it?

Do you need a new, easy, & healthy snack idea for the kids or your significant other? Try this snowball cake.

Spread peanut butter (preferably all natural, no sugar added) on a rice cake. Sprinkle with raisins, cinnamon, and shredded coconut. Drizzle light agave or honey on top for a little extra sweetener.

This is gluten-free and a relatively low-fat but high protein snack. It is also free of artificial sugars, which is seemingly harder and harder to come by these days. This little snack is guaranteed to keep you full as well!

Campbell's soup to label gmos

Today was a huge breakthrough in the food world. Campbell's Soup company announced it would begin mandatory labeling for foods derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). GMOs are living organisms whose genetic material have been artificially created.

The company said it would advocate for federal legislation requiring that all food and beverage companies simply and clearly label and GMOs. Campbell's said the U.S. government should provide a national standard for labeling requirements so that all consumers are informed about what they are eating.

"We have always believed that consumers have the right to know what’s in their food," Campbell's president and CEO Denise Morrison said in a statement. "GMO has evolved to be a top consumer food issue reaching a critical mass of 92 percent of consumers in favor of putting it on the label."

Campbell's created a website, www.whatsinmyfoodcom, to further inform consumers about how its products are made.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association continues to fight against mandatory labeling of GMOs.
